009 Re:Cyborg

Japanese anime at its least accessible

Despite coming from Kenji Kamiyama, the writer and director of the rather good Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex, 009 Re: Cyborg is Japanese anime at its least accessible.

Set in a future where cyborgs are investigating terrorists who appear to be possessed by ‘God’, it undercuts any redeeming visual spark with a story that’s not really a story at all.

Instead, we’re submitted to 103 bizarre minutes of pretentious, misjudged musings on theology via a script so thick with exposition that it’s like wading through tar.

Ambitious, perhaps, but hardly entertaining.
