Bert Jansch was the folkie’s folkie: a sublime guitarist and consummate musician who was a profound influence on Bob Dylan, Jimmy Page and countless others.
A year on from his death, this 1992 documentary serves as a monument of sorts to a quiet talent who let his picking do the talking, something host Billy Connolly might have taken to heart while filming his tiresome interjections.
Ralph McTell, Martin Carthy and Wizz Jones are among other notables involved in a film that’s unapologetically aimed at the connoisseur. Still, there’s enough artistry on display here to leave even the uninitiated grudgingly impressed.
