An American Haunting

3

Donald Sutherland and Sissy Spacek are on top thespy form as parents whose daughter (Rachel Hurd-Wood) is tormented by a ghost every night. This 19th-century chiller is based on true events - allegedly the only time in US history that a spirit has "officially" caused someone's death...

Director Courtney Solomon tries to keep the audience jittery with strange noises, feral dogs and unearthly visitations all sardine-packed-in from the off. But it's difficult to sustain the thrills: visitations come and go and, after a while, become all too familiar. Thankfully there's more than enough to make up for it - Sutherland and Spacek, strong performances from the British contingent and some dizzying cinematography. It's also unspeakably scary at times - without ever resorting to schlock violence or gore.
