Resembling one of Disney’s ’50s nature docs updated for the carbon footprint era, Arctic Tale aims to tug the heart-strings and charm minds with its sneakily fabricated ‘story’ of polar bear cub Nanu and walrus calf Seela (composite creations both). Rounding off with tots squawking energy-saving advice to camera, this is meant for kids; though even they might regret Queen Latifah’s cutesy narration and the heavy-pawed jukebox choices (‘We Are Family’ as a clan of critters frolic). Luckily the sugar coating doesn’t dilute the shock and awe of husband-and-wife directors Adam Ravetch and Sarah Robertson’s images, like walruses forced to abandon an ice floe wrought by global warming. The dire warnings and Darwinian truths may be cotton-wooled, but in visual terms it’s a respectable companion piece to March Of The Penguins.
