Burma VJ: From A Closed Country

4

Intense and important documentary following the monk rebellion in Burma

From headlines to cinemas in less than two years, Anders Østergaard’s gripping doc traces the monk rebellion in Rangoon that filled the world’s front pages in September 2007.

The uprising against Burma’s tyrannical regime met with swift, bloody retaliation.

With journos barred from the country, it would’ve been covered up but for efforts of Burma’s undercover video journalists (VJs), secretly leaking their guerrilla footage to the foreign press.

These shaky recordings, interspersed with reconstruction scenes at the VJ HQ, look surprisingly sharp and give Burma VJ an unforgettable and powerful immediacy.
