The fat lady has stopped singing, but the show's not over for Maria Callas (Fanny Ardant) in Franco Zeffirelli's highbrow art-pic. Set at the tail-end of the diva's life, the film sees her approached by a gay music promoter (Jeremy Irons) keen to have her film one last opera for posterity. With Ardant vamping for France and Ironssporting a ponytail, the camp factor is off the scale. Alas, the octagenarian Zeffirelli directs so sluggishly the title feels only too appropriate.
