Thor Freudenthal follows Hotel For Dogs with this sunny, likeable, if episodic film of the stick-figured bestseller, in which smart-mouthed 10-year-old Greg (Zachary Gordon) battles the hell that is middle school.
A family flick Malcolm In The Middle, it’s acute about the terrors of bullies, older brothers and PE humiliations.
Overly faithful to the book, Greg is riskily portrayed as a social-climbing dork, allowing Robert Capron (as un-cool best friend Rowley) to pinch their scenes together.
Still, lots of Home Alone slapstick for tweens, and enough wry gags for oldsters.
