Dragonball: Evolution

1

Anime adaptation fails to deliver.

“In a time before many can remember,” intones the opening cavernous voiceover, a big bunch of nastiness happened.

Hang on - that “time” was thousands of years ago, so who exactly can remember? Can we meet them?

That lazy gaffe kicks off Hollywood’s latest plundering of a madly worshipped manga, a yawnsome, perfunctory fantasy flick that earmarks Justin Chatwin’s schoolkid Goku as the saviour of the world, provided he and his tagalong chums (a cardboard Emmy Rossum and a demeaned Chow Yun-Fat) can gather up the seven wish-granting dragonballs ahead of mint-coloured alien tyrant Piccolo.

Tearing through its mystical, who-gives-a-toss storyline like a pissed bat bouncing off cave walls, Dragonball’s cocktail of cheap effects, eye-rolling cliches and dismal direlogue will have fans of the series condemning it as a beyond-lame failure.

The unfamiliar, meanwhile, will simply scratch their heads in puzzled agony.

I saw this movie today as both a member of the public and a casual viewer of the anime series...It was a waste of money to see it, poor plot structure was all the way through, c**p acting from all the cast (and Chow Yun-Fat's acting made me cringe). The main problem for me was the effects and fights, the last battle is c**p and a huge let down with it being over in about 10 minutes and the effects are dissapointing and look cheap. If you are a fan I would say stay clear of it because you will be dissapointed and for everyone else stay clear too unless you like c**p story, c**p acting and c**p everything Hope This Helps Tommy

I saw this film today (8th April) as both a casual fan and a normal film fan and all I can say is that it was a waste of money. The film has a poor structure throughout and poor acting alongside it from all the cast (including a very poor turn from Chow Yun-Fat). One of the big holes in the film aside the acting plot and everything else is the effects and the fights...the final fight is over in about 10 minutes and doesnt involve much fighting and the effects are a major let down and make the film look very cheap. The overall effect made me think that the film had been made by Uwe Boll (honestly) and I think so much more potential could have been made from the film...the only thing that really upset me was being sat next to hardcore Dragonball fans and listening to them point out all the negative points in the film...for the whole movie! Hope This Helps Tommy

I saw this yesterday, and it is definitely this year's 'Speed Racer!' It was horrific! All the jokes were awful, dsespite the film being hysterically funny for all the wrong reasons. The acting is dire, the main villain is a pussycat compared to big villains like The Joker or Doctor Octopus. The japanese box office shows that even though it's a manga comic adap, they still hated it just as much as every other country. Gets an extra star for some OK special effects, but with a $100M budget, this is a big waste of time and effort-for the viewer.

This movie sucks, no question. But your opening "gaffe" is nonsense. Haven't you ever heard of stories being passed down through generations? Doesn't excuse this POS movie, however.

I never really got into the cartoon, but saw this film the other day and i thought that the story line was not good at all, but i did like the effects in the film, but this film could have been much more better. and also the director could have gotten a better main actor to play gocu!

Inane kiddie fantasy that boasts forgettable set-pieces, rubbish editing and some heinous performances. I'd skip it and any oncoming sequels.
