Stevan Riley turns his attention to the inspirational story of how the West Indies cricket team became world champions

Fire in Babylon review

This rousing doc from director Stevan Riley (Blue Blood) celebrates the all-conquering West Indies cricket teams of the late ’70s and ’80s who, under Clive Lloyd’s leadership, shook off their ‘calypso cricketers’ reputation and became ruthless world-beaters.

Drawing on interviews with charismatic players and evocative archival footage, the reggae-scored Fire In Babylon is partisan in its approach.

Yet it powerfully demonstrates how the successes of these sportsmen, in a game associated with white colonial superiority, proved inspirational in the global struggle for black equality.
