An energetic attempt to blast Mean Girls with a ‘gay ray’, G.B.F. (yep, Gay Best Friend) is a colourful, hyperactive romp that, despite attempting to bust apart teen-flick clichés, quickly conforms to type.
When Tanner (Michael J. Willett) is outed as gay at school, he’s adopted by a trio of popular girls (Sasha Pieterse, Andrea Bowen, Xosha Roquemore) who want him as their trendy G.B.F.
Neither as scalpel-sharp as MTV’s high-school series Awkward, nor as hilarious as Clueless and Bring It On, Darren Stein’s film is fun if forgettable, mostly notable for a scene-stealing performance from Will & Grace’s Megan Mullally as an overbearingly accepting mum.
