Gang Story

3

A true story based on other movies

There’s an air of familiarity to much in Gang Story, from the dull title down (in its native France it went by the far more evocative Les Lyonnais).

Whole sequences are cribbed from greater films, The Godfather in particular, and much of its French-crims-in-period-‘taches schtick feels like an echo-chamber version of Mesrine.

It’s a pity, because the true story at its centre – about the most audacious gang of thieves in France’s history – is good meat, and the time-jumping narrative following one man’s rise to the top and his sidekick’s transition from right-hand-man to liability promises much.

Sadly, though, there are just too many moments of déjà vu to truly satisfy.

I saw this and quite enjoyed it, but as the guys at total film say it harks to the "golden gangster" films.... I disagree when comparisons are made to Mesrine, that's just the way French gangsters looked at the time, especially the gypsies (I live in France and a lot look like that now...). With a well rounded performance from underrated cool-dude Gerard Lanvin and a solid one from the ever excellent Tchecky Karyo; this film reminded me most of a French "Once Upon A Time In America".
