Girl Most Likely

Kristen Wiig falters with a tonally unsure dramedy

Originally dubbed Imogene after Kristen Wiig’s troubled central character, the latest dramedy from Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer Berman (American Splendor) can’t decide if it’s a broad farce or a poignant portrait.

Small wonder then, that it falls short onboth counts, failing to earn either Bridesmaids-sized laughs or nods of recognition.

Wiig tries hard as a failed playwright whose botched faux-suicide forces her back in with dotty mom Annette Bening.

Alas, watching her turn that frown upside-down isn’t nearlyas much fun as Matt Dillon’s turn as a CIA-obsessed fantasist.

Bridesmaids was pretty good, but Wiig is smug and simply not very funny.
