Keep The Lights On

3

The life and struggles of a gay couple in Manhattan

Writer/director Ira Sachs (2007’s Married Life) patiently chronicles 10 turbulent years in the relationship between Erik (Thure Lindhardt), a Danish expat documentary film-maker in late-1990s New York, and the preppy Paul (Zachary Booth), an initially closeted literary agent who develops a crack addiction.

Despite stylistic virtues – the warm super 16mm photography, the deft use of the late Arthur Russell’s melancholic songs –Keep The Lights On feels lopsided in its focus on Erik, with Paul remaining a strangely remote object of the former’s romantic devotion.
