“It looks like a dog with a hard-on. Red is ultra-powerful…” Karl Lagerfeld there, admiring his finger gloved in scarlet leather. The legendary German-born designer presides over fashion’s surfaces with aristocratic assurance – and there’s no image he has greater control over than his own. Filmmaker Rodolfe Marconi shadowed his subject for more than a year, gaining unprecedented access to his Paris home, photo shoots and dinners with the likes of Princess Caroline and Nicole Kidman. And yet this swish documentary reveals little behind the veneer of a man rarely caught with his shades off. Instead, Marconi colludes like an awestruck fan, letting the witty eccentric hold court with childhood anecdotes and quotable gems. Not that we’re complaining – after all, who needs reality when the illusion’s sweeter than Chanel?
