It’s a case of don’t get Mads, get even for Hannibal star Mikkelsen in this slow-burn period piece, a Franco-German Robin Hood which sees his 16th-Century horse trader take arms against a duplicitous baron when he’s denied justice by the courts.
Director Arnaud des Pallières lends a bleak austerity to the story, but with only one murky battle scene to quicken the blood it’s hardly a recipe for unbridled excitement.
The excellent Denis Lavant crops up as a theologian who questions Kohlhaas’ quest; you can’t help wishing des Pallieres had made more effort to dramatise it.
