It’s probably unwise to approach On Landguard Point as a cinematic work – this is a plot-free piece of performance art displaying a heavy debt to Derek Jarman.
The brainchild of artist Robert Pacitti, it’s a disjointed hymn to the east-of-England flatlands that brings together an avant-garde group of local people – majorettes, scouts, a naked, bald, female trombone player emerging from the sea – and sets them against the windswept coastline.
Of course, one man’s high art is another man’s pretentious old toss, and Pacitti’s florid voiceover won’t convince the latter group otherwise.
