Ahead of this summer’s World Cup, James Erskine’s evocative doc relives England’s performance two decades ago in Italia ’90.
Drawing on Pete Davies’ excellent eye-witness account All Played Out, Erskine’s One Night In Turin argues that the endeavours of Bobby Robson’s players eased the memories of Heysel and Hillsborough, leading to a rebirth of the national game (30m British telly viewers witnessed Gazza’s historic blub in the semi-final against West Germany).
Solemn voiceover and underwhelming reconstructions aside, the images of ultimately heroic failure retain a resonant emotional kick.
