As grim as the Edinburgh council estate its characters listlessly roam, Colm McCarthy’s kitchen-sink horror of runes amid the ruins is highly atmospheric – and depressing to boot.
There’s a beastie on the loose in Auld Reekie, but is it Cathal (James Nesbitt) or Fergal (Niall Bruton), and can Fergal’s mother (Red Road’s Kate Dickie) or new love (Hanna Stanbridge) save him from his fate?
It feels like the story ends just when it’s really starting to cook, but this is an original, engrossing exploration of ancient black magic against a backdrop of endless grey.
