From 1972’s Death Line to The Descent, micro-budget Brit horror has done itself some favours when it’s chosen to Womble around underground. With a few caveats, that’s also the case in Steve Barker’s debut, although you might recognise the plot from any ’70s Dr Who episode. A mysterious businessman who knows more than he’s saying ( Julian Wadham) hires Ray Stevenson’s mercenaries to explore an Eastern European bunker – one that was home to some dodgy German experiments during WW2 – only to unleash evil forces that he, and they, cannot possibly control. In this case it’s not Cybermen but ghost Nazis (surely the worst kind). It’s all a little silly, but the cast has a certain surly gravitas, spitting out pithy military speak as they’re slowly picked off one by one. Even better, the harrowing moments just about outweigh the ham-handed ones.
