Snow Flower and the Secret Fan

2

Spellbinding cinematography helps chart the generations of friendship

In the vein of his The Joy Luck Club, director Wayne Wang clocks up another adap celebrating women’s bonds across generations.

In modern Shanghai, the pressures of adult life threaten the friendship of Nina (Li Bingbing) and Sophia (Gianna Jun).

Their plight’s echoed by ancestors Lily and Snow Flower, who speak through a secret silk-fan language until diverging fortunes test their loyalty.

This rich weave of eras looks pretty, but plays to an exoticised vision of old-world China, even as it demystifies the excruciating custom of foot-binding.
