Dating from 1972, Andrei Tarkovsky’s contemplative adaptation of Stanislaw Lem’s sci-fi novel offered a humanist response to Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. Like Soderbergh’s remake, it’s the tale of a cosmonaut troubled by visits from his dead wife on a space station orbiting the sentient planet Solaris, prompting fears relating to love, loss, guilt and mortality, and suggesting that space exploration is merely an extension of humanity’s search for itself. It’s a heady slow-burner and Tarkovsky’s near-hallucinatory direction is wholly captivating.
