Short of squeezing in Greyfriars Bobby, Robbie Burns and a village that only wakes up once every 100 years, it’s hard to conceive a more clichéd depiction of Scotland than the one Charles Martin Smith fashions in this corny Celtic caper.
This recreation of a half-assed prank by ’50s students to liberate the fabled Stone of Scone from Westminster Abbey is laughably seen here as a pivotal episode in the fight for independence. Robert Carlyle, Peter Mullan and Billy Boyd try their best with shallow material but find themselves undermined from the off by the casting of an Englishman (Charlie Stardust Cox) as earnest young hero Ian Hamilton.
Where’s James McAvoy when he’s actually Wanted?
