“People ask me if I would’ve defended Hitler. I’d even defend Bush, but only if he agreed to plead guilty…” So says lawyer Jacques Vergès, the subject of this doc from Single White Female director Barbet Schroeder. Gaining notoriety for defending Algerian bomber Djamila Bouhired, Vergès’ client list also includes Nazi Klaus Barbie. His personal life’s just as controversial: he married Bouhired prior to an unexplained eight-year absence (many think he was with Pol Pot). Most talking heads are pro-Vergès, claiming he’s a scourge of the French establishment. It’s an overlong, info-crammed piece, but in the thick of it lies a crash-course in modern terrorism.
