The Conspirator

A plot to kill Lincoln - or is it all a set up?

The Conspirator review

Robert Redford’s first film since Lions For Lambs is a dull courtroom drama about the trial of eight people charged with conspiring to kill Lincoln.

Lawyer Frederick Aiken (James McAvoy) is a reluctant defender of Mary Surratt (Robin Wright), the woman who owned the boarding house where the assassins met, until he suspects she’s bait to bring in her elusive conspirator son.

There are Guantanamo parallels – the accused are locked in solitary confinement and abused by captors – but the slow pace and endless long shots of men walking purposefully test the patience of even the most willing viewer.
