Oh here we go, another ‘re-imagining’ of a classic horror that no doubt… oh, wait. The thing is, ‘classic’ isn’t really a fair term for George A. Romero’s 1973 horror The Crazies, ‘c**p’ would be far more suitable. Put it this way, you should certainly not fear a butchery of some seminal genre piece, this after all is hardly Halloween. Don’t be fooled though, this isn’t an endorsement, 2010’s Crazies is as formulaic and uninspired as any of the slick productions that have preceded it, just breathe a sigh of relief, you couldn’t care less about it’s original incarnation.
Clearly director Breck Eisner is a big fan of Zack Snyder’s (actually rather good) take on Dawn of the Dead, and thought, ‘I know, I’ll make an inferior version of this with the bloke from Deadwood‘. Cue the always brilliant Timothy Olyphant. Seriously, he’s one of those rare actors (Cusack, Fillion) who genuinely make a film at least 34% better than it would be without them. Sadly all he seems to star in (Hitman, Die Hard 4), is tosh. This is no exception.
So much does it lean towards Snyder’s 2004 effort that even the opening credits come glazed with a Johnny Cash song. It’s quite depressing that in 6 years no one could have pillaged another down trodden country star’s back catalogue. Word on the street is Wilie Nelson’s is ripe for the raping, who knows, he might enjoy it.
Anyway enough moaning about comparisons and whether it’s all be done before – it has, just in case that hasn’t been fully conveyed. The Crazies sees everyman Sheriff David (Olyphant) uncover a chemical spill in his small Iowan town that sends all the yokels, sorry, locals, you guessed it – crazy. Crazy in this instant means angry, murdering and extremely rude individuals who apparently will stop at nothing to enforce the stereotype that Americans are idiots. To combat this the good ‘ol U.S Military are sent in to quell the outbreak. By quell they mean kill everyone, even the uninfected – so poor old Dave, his Mrs and his partner (as in ‘Howdy I’m the Deputy’ rather than Civil) must dodge the threat of the Army, whilst simultaneously avoiding former friends who are now nuttier than an almond convention. Rock. Hard place.
This allows the picture to move from one set piece to the next firing off rehashed ideas stolen from better films. It’s all done in a flashy ‘MTV’ sort of way though, so unless you’re a connoisseur of this genre, you won’t notice. There are a couple of laughs to be had, one actually quite commendable bit of action in a car wash is a particular highlight, and an ongoing joke about the Deputy saving Sheriff Dave is on occasions titter worthy.
You know what? All of that’s immaterial. A film like this is exactly what’s wrong with cinema – p**s poor, conveyer belt film making that cons you into thinking you’re watching something new. Polishing genre staples is one thing, but it’s got to the stage where Hollywood is remaking remakes. You could put on Dawn of the Dead, The Hills have Eyes (I &II), Mutant Chronicles or Slither and effectively be watching the same thing. It’s even more insulting when they have the gall to decline in quality. At least Dawn was a good film, well made with some original ideas of it’s own. Keeping old I.P’s alive is important, these things shouldn’t be consigned to history – but when cynical studios churn out dross based on a name, you just wonder why we keep coming back. It’s tragic.
The Crazies doesn’t even have the balls to go for the 18 certificate, playing it safe on the financial front as well. All the 13 year olds who sneak in will love it and have a hoot, but when your appreciative audience was born in 1997, that’s nothing to shout about.

The worst thing is, it’s not that it’s terrible, you’ll be mildly entertained throughout – you just can’t really call it a film on it’s own merits. It appears to be a gaffa taped together collage of every half baked horror from the last decade. It lacks personality and any desire to distinguish itself and as such will be forgotten as soon as it’s run ends. It’s OK though, it made money right?

George Romero's 1973 cult classic was a fun film. It focused a lot on the government and the scientists trying to figure out the cure. It also had some solid chaos in it. It was a very memorable low-budget film and when a remake was announced, I was not pleased.
Boy do I love it when I am wrong sometimes! The Crazies remake was a fun film. It had the tension, the violence, subtle social commentary regarding how the politics in America work, and it was a fun thrill ride. What I loved most was the violence. The story was pretty faithful to the original and all it needed to do was up the violence. Great fun and it kept you guessing when things were going to turn bad. The tension was perfect. Easily one of the better horror remakes I have seen in the last few years. My only minor gripe with this film was the ending. I won't spoil it, but it felt a little lame to me. However,As a fas 133 hedging consultant I liked the movie so much, I want a sequel! How crazy is that?!

Fairly good horror, does nothing that hasn't been done before but it's an entertaining, fairly tense movie.
It's not too slow paced and the practical effects of 'the crazies' are really good and convincing.
Must check out the original and see if it's better.
