Like The Great White Silence (1924), this is another jaws-to-the-floor ’20s British documentary, superbly restored by the BFI’s archivists.
Directed by Captain John Noel, the pioneering official cameraman of the 1924 Everest expedition, it chronicles the doomed efforts of explorers George Mallory and Andrew Irvine to ascend the world’s highest peak.
Accompanied by Simon Fisher Turner’s evocative new score, TEOE captures the transcendental power of the Himalayas, where the fearsome mountain itself is referred to by awed Tibetans as “The goddess mother of the world.”
