Echoing Fellini without suffering by comparison, Paolo Sorrentino follows his US-set This Must Be The Place by returning to Rome for a symphony of high-life ennui.
Sorrentino regular Toni Servillo gets its slick and soulful measure as Jep, a likeable ageing libertine and lapsed novelist whose response to an ex-lover’s death is to glide from profane parties to sacred spots in a state of freefall.
Aided by master DoP Luca Bigazzi, Sorrentino’s camera swoons with him, conjuring spectacles without swamping human feeling.
Splashes of overstatement aside, the ambition intoxicates.
