The Great Hip Hop Hoax

4

Scottish rap duo accentuate their success

Following record-shop portrait Sound It Out, director Jeanie Finlay’s latest doc is a pointed and often hilarious music industry exposé.

Unable to get gigs, duo Silibil N’ Brains – ‘the rapping Proclaimers’ – adopt Californian accents out of desperation and find themselves in a fierce bidding war.

Fast cash and endless partying ensue, but the fear of their true Scottish identities being found out weighs heavily on the young duo.

The talking-head format may be shopworn, but it rarely undermines this infectious, insightful look at the fickleness of pop stardom.
