It’s been nearly 50 years since the sword and sandal movement swept the drive-ins, when Italian schlockmeisters wrapped the likes of Steve Reeves and Mickey Hargitay in leather and had them throw Styrofoam boulders around in an endless series of Hercules films. This lousy attempt at a revival isn’t even good for camp laughs.
Armed with $70m to spend on relentless CGI, director Renny Harlin is a long way from the glory days of Die Hard 2 and a lot closer to Cutthroat Island. If you must, Legend is an origin story, with Hercules (Kellan Lutz) flexing his way to overthrowing the king (Scott Adkins) who betrayed him.
On this evidence, Dwayne Johnson’s forthcoming Herc movie has already won the tussle.
