With ‘LOVE’ and ‘HATE’ on his knuckles, Robert Mitchum’s phoney preacher is evil personified in this black-and-white parable that’s inspired generations of filmmakers.
Directed by actor Charles Laughton (the only movie he ever helmed), it plays like an expressionist nightmare, as Mitchum’s Rev. Harry Powell pitches up in West Virginia to pursue the kids of his dead cellmate in a greed-fuelled quest for bounty.
Big themes loom like shadows, as Mitchum and Lillian Gish’s surrogate mama battle it out for the souls of two innocents. Still great after all these years.
