The Referees

It's a hard life being a referee...

The Referees review

Few jobs involve such media scrutiny and public abuse as being an international football referee.

This fascinating fly-on-the-wall doc follows the men-in-the-middle (including England’s Howard Webb) during the 2008 Euro Championships.

We’re given access to the officials’ changing rooms pre- and post-games; listen to their frenzied communications via earpieces during play and see their decisions being analysed at press conferences.

Eschewing voice-over, director Yves Hinant spotlights the reality of an occupation where an unpopular call can result in death threats.

Superb documentary, even if you're not a footie fan, it's an wonderful window into a job that very few of us have ever seen and most likely don't even really think about (even footie fans). Well worth a watch.
