Tom At The Farm

3

A rural game of cat and mouse

If you saw his last film, the florid three-hour transgender epic Laurence Anyways, you’ll already be aware of the huge ambitions harboured by Quebec-born writer/director/editor/star Xavier Dolan

Just 24, Dolan’s already on his fourth film – a psychological thriller parked somewhere between Hitchcock and Highsmith that sees him play a Montreal native who must contend with his dead lover’s mother and older brother when he arrives at their family farm for the funeral.

It’s wildly melodramatic, typified by the ear-assaulting score. But there’s something compelling about Dolan’s supreme self-confidence, even when misplaced. He takes risks – and that’s attractive.
