Twenty Feet From Stardom

Neville's doc sings the praises of backing vocalists

As a backing vocalist, you’re expected to “come in, take very little credit – and go home early!” quips David Lasley, who once trilled behind Sister Sledge. There’s more to it than that of course, as evinced by Morgan Neville’s uplifting documentary, which swivels the spotlight on this unsung world and its largely anonymous ‘stars.’

For back-up singer extraordinaire Darlene Love (aka Danny Glover’s other half in Lethal Weapon) and others, the joy of singing, not fame, is its own reward. But it’s ours too: without those voices, classics like ‘Walk On The Wild Side’ would surely remain only half-formed doodles.

A highly entertaining musical history lesson that could (and should) just boost a few careers into the bargain.
