
The cultural jolts of Breathless and The 400 Blows swept their directors – Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut – to the fore of the French New Wave.
Fellow countryman Emmanuel Laurent’s hardly on a par, but doesn’t need to do much to make this doc captivate – cool glamour is already inscribed in the grainy archive footage it comprises.
Laurent probes the pair’s stylistic and political differences and their friendship’s collapse by letter exchange – in which Truffaut’s response began: “I think the moment has come to tell you, in detail, how, according to me, you act like a shit.”
