In July ’05, a man was dropped outside a hospital in the state of Washington. He bled to death on the operating table, his colon perforated after having sex with an Arabian stallion. Not an oily porn star with an exotic nom de plume, mind you, but a real, four-legged Arabian stallion, hung like a horse because he was, indeed, a horse. The police investigation that followed this bizarre incident led to the discovery of hundreds of home-made movies... Robinson Devor’s docu-drama sets out to “aestheticise the sleaze” as it presents a community of ‘zoophiles’. Comprised of poetic recreations, ghostly voiceovers and an ambient, transcendental score, Zoo gleams and shimmers like a Terrence Malick movie, probing some taboo-busting ethical questions with neither heat nor condemnation. Saddle up… for the film at least.
