An elegiac and heartfelt directorial debut from Richard Jobson, this is closer in style and spirit to Wong Kar-wai than to Ken Loach. Kevin McKidd (Trainspotting) gives an impressive central performance as Frankie, a young man from Edinburgh struggling to find a sense of hope and turn his back on the violence and drinking that have blighted his turbulent life. Jobson, who also wrote the semi-autobiographical script, also sits down for a typically articulate commentary on the DVD.
