On the brink of a world war, an American/Russian team (featuring Roy Scheider, John Lithgow and Helen Mirren) heads for Jupiter on a mission to uncover what film fans had been arguing over for years - - what exactly was going on at the end of 2001? HAL makes a comeback to help them, but even though they find a Star Child and millions of monoliths, neither they nor the audience receive much explanation. Peter Hyams' '84 sequel is more intelligent than most contemporary sci-fi, and there are tense moments, but it's mostly drawn-out and ponderous.
DVD Extras:
Nothing. Not even a trailer. Visually, 2010 hasn't dated badly, though it's more like a York Notes guide to its stellar predecessor than a sequel. The disc could have built on this, but the opportunity for special featurettes, commentary or even some old Arthur C Clarke interview is missed.
