If the visual grandeur of 2046 is inevitably diminished on DVD, the film remains a magnificent tale of romantic heartbreak, which combines formal cinematic brilliance with an operatic intensity of feeling. Tony Leung plays the writer and cuckolded husband from In The Mood For Love, now a compulsive womaniser in late '60s Hong Kong, who's haunted by memories of former loves. Trapping his beautiful cast (which includes Zhang Ziyi, Faye Wong and Gong Li) in strikingly lit interiors, Wong Kar-wai conjures up his most fatalistic work, where happiness is fleeting and where escaping the past is an impossible burden.
