30 Rock Season 1

3

Best known here as the scripter of Mean Girls, gorgeous geek Tina Fey parlays her years as a writer and performer on Saturday Night Live into 30 Rock, a behind-the-scenes sitcom that’s a hipper, younger proposition than Aaron Sorkin’s Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip. Fey plays loser-in-love Liz Lemon, the head writer on an ailing NBC sketch show who does battle each week with parent-company honcho Jack Donaghy (a brilliant Alec Baldwin), whose attempts to ‘improve’ the series include adding wayward black actor Tracy Jordan to the all-female cast in order to capture the ‘urban’ demographics… Not every episode here is a winner but the hit rate is high enough to recommend these three discs, not least because you get more of stand-out character Kenneth (the TV-loving NBC errand boy) in a selection of hilarious shorts. Other special features on the menu include a cast commentary, deleted scenes and bloopers.
