A Cat In Paris

Surprisingly about a cat in Paris

Frenchier than a French film set in France, Jean-Loup Felicioli and Alain Gagnol’s animation about a Parisian girl whose cat is an actual cat burglar is a masterclass in taking simple ideas and executing them beautifully.

Its retro, sketchy animation, for instance, purrs over the whimsical premise with a sinister sense of noir, peaking with a scene set in total darkness; its plot, which seems juvenile on paper, is loaded with emotional maturity.

As for the script, the fun is in the charm rather than in the odd references to GoodFellas.

Still, A Cat In Paris: c’est magnifique.
