A Man Vanishes

A bewildering mix of documentary and fiction

A bewildering mix of documentary and fiction, maverick director Shōhei Imamura’s first independent movie takes a real-life missing-person case and has it probed by a team consisting of the missing man’s real-life fiancée and an investigator played by Shigeru Tsuyuguchi. Friends, colleagues and family are interviewed; embezzlement and sexual two-timing are unearthed. And then Imamura startlingly blows the whole artifice wide open, calling into question whether anything we’ve hitherto seen is ‘real’. Confusing as hell, but worth sticking with.
