About Elly

2

A suspenseful and provocative drama from the director of A Separation

Before earning global recognition with the Oscar-winning A Separation, Iranian director Asghar Farhadi made this equally compelling account of a weekend break gone wrong.

Initially, it seems an engaging if frivolous ensemble piece, but  an aura of tension surrounds Elly (Taraneh Alidoosti), whose social awkwardness jars with her gregarious companions.

And then - in a brilliantly staged nail-biter - everything changes, prising open the group dynamic to create a sly parable about a culture where everybody has their reasons for being selective with the truth.

The result is suspenseful and subtly provocative.
