Aeon Flux

1

Casting Oscar-winning women in shoddy action movies is a BAD IDEA. Sure, they want to prove they're versatile and can do ballsy blockbuster as well as worthy arthouse, but for Theron, the lesson learned from Aeon Flux is: always read the script before signing on the dotted.

The one-line pitch has the humourless title character going rogue in her sterile futureworld after the government has her sister killed. Jerky, pretentious and confused, the plot barely functions as linking matter between the sub-Matrix action set-pieces. Don't attempt to follow the flapping threads: it hurts.

Theron and producer Gale Anne Hurd make an agonised effort at explaining the film's social relevance on the commentary, but Karyn Kusama dodges gab-track duties. When even the director can't sit through the film again, you know it's best avoided.
