Against The Ropes

2

Final confirmation that Meg Ryan is no longer the heavyweight talent she pretends to be. Against The Ropes has America's sweetheart struggling to fill the shoulder pads of Jackie Kallen, the first female promoter in boxing history. Kallen's battle to gain acceptance from her ball-scratching, alpha-male peers comes to an end when she discovers Luther Shaw (Omar Epps), an untried chump soon to metamorphose into a tooth-loosening contender.

The problem here is the dialogue. It's just too damn sassy, too tightly packed with "you-go-girlfriend"-flavoured zingers for a movie centred on a sport this brutal and urban. This is Raging Bull re-imagined by Sex And The City's Carrie Bradshaw. And it's the least honest boxing movie you'll ever see.
