Despite focusing on Ali in his pomp (1964-1974), Michael Mann's grandiose biopic still has to fit a lot into two-and-a-half hours. We get Cassius Clay winning the world title, his conversion to Islam and the name Muhammad Ali, his refusal to fight in Vietnam, the stripping of his title and, finally, the superhuman effort it took to regain it against George Foreman. There's also the personal relationships with sports journalist Howard Cosell (Jon Voight), Malcolm X (Mario Van Peebles) and the women in his life. Okay, so it may only scratch beneath Ali's skin, but there's no faulting Will Smith's performance or the movie's attempt to chronicle a turbulent decade in US history.
