All Tomorrow's Parties

DIY Fest gets DIY doc...

Set in a UK seaside-holiday camp, the ATP festival invites alt-rock’s figureheads to curate adventurous weekend line-ups for variously wasted and duly enraptured muso-phile hipsters. Shot by Jonathan Caouette (Tarnation), Vincent Moon and festival-goers, this documentary’s live-wire cut’n’paste approach captures the anything-goes DIY spirit of the weekender. There are drawbacks: among others, live cuts of a grizzly Grinderman, a devilish Dirty Three, a mesmerising Portishead and Iggy Pop crowd-surfing against the dying of the light are cut too choppy and short. But DVD extras compensate, including full tracks alongside a “key” to online footage from future ATPs as it appears. All this, and tomorrow’s parties too? Bargain.
