Alligator/Alligator 2: The Mutation

4

"It's Jaws in the sewers," was (probably) the pitch for Alligator, a shabby-but-hilarious creature feature in which a baby 'gator's flushed down the toilet into the Chicago sewer system. Living off dog carcasses pumped full of experimental hormones, Ramon (the muncher's monicker) turns into a 50-foot monster...

Scriptwriter John Sayles (yep, the same John Sayles who's now renowned as one of America's finest directors) manages to turn this sow's ear into an alligator-skin purse by overdosing on tongue-in-cheek humour. Hammy turns from Robert Forster as a cop and Henry Silva as a hunter drafted in to save the day help make this every bit as fun as a B-movie creature feature should be.

Then, 11 years later, Alligator 2 took exactly the same idea and flushed it straight round the U-bend. A pointless sequel that lacks the biting wit or toothy charm of its predecessor, it proves that even in the realm of schlock horror it's easy to tell the difference between quality and a huge croc of shit.
