Amelie

5

Raised at home by obsessive parents, Amélie (Audrey Tautou) has grown into a dreamy loner. Then she falls for the equally oddball Nino (Mathieu Kassovitz), and is soon splitting her time between impishly meddling as she tries to improve other peoples’ lives, and making elaborate plans to meet Nino in the most perfect way her vivid imagination can dream up...

DVD Extras:

Director's commentary. With a huge cast of perfectly imagined characters, a modern fairytale plot and the Montmartre district of Paris providing a sumptuous backdrop, Amélie on DVD is a treat for the eyes, ears and heart. Jean-Pierre Jeunet's commentary is wonderful - as funny, eclectic and entertaining as the movie itself. We learn, for example, that the skimming stones were CG additions because Tautou couldn't throw them and he apologetically explains that all the orgasming couples "are German." But he also keeps hinting at the wealth of extras on the second DVD, which is annoying since this presentation has just the one extra and the two disc version isn't out until later in the year. Worth a wait, you say? We'd be inclined to agree.
