When translating Bret Easton Ellis' bestseller to the big screen, some careful re-interpretation was always going to be necessary. And, thankfully, writer/director Mary Harron made a smart move when she avoided the gorebath approach in favour of a wry investigation of the '80s Alpha-male psyche. So, instead of being the usual slasher, Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) is just a horrific exaggeration of the yuppie stereotype. Scary, - but funny.
DVD Extras:
Deleted scenes, on-set interviews, trailer. The box is keen to let you know that, if you were to watch all the extras one after another, 44 minutes of your life would have been well spent. It's a strange boast when other titles on the shelves often contain much more than the usual on-set gabs and snipped scenes - and don't shout as loudly about it. Okay, the extras are engaging enough, but aren't we now justified in expecting just that little bit more?
