James Stewart's smalltown lawyer goes head-to-head with big-city prosecutor George C Scott (in his first major role) to defend a soldier accused of murdering the man who had allegedly raped his wife. Although the `controversial' subject matter and explicit language now look quaintly dated, Otto Preminger's cynical view of the judicial system is curiously contemporary and still serves as a blueprint for numerous TV 'tec shows.
DVD Extras:
Photos, filmographies, original advertising material, trailers. The movie's a corker and the print's pristine - which is lucky, because there are scant extras. The promo material consists of a dozen or so production stills and a few posters accompanied by Duke Ellington's sultry score, while the filmographies amount to a single page of selected highlights from the cast's careers. Nor is the movie itself in colour, as stated on the cover!
